When the missiles started falling, everything changed for Nastya.
At just 12 years old with cerebral palsy living in a special needs orphanage, she had already lost so much. An orphan in eastern Ukraine, she was now watching the world around her be destroyed by bombs.
Night after night, she huddled in the basement of her orphanage. The walls shook. Windows rattled. Each strike brought fresh terror.
Then one night, rescuers came. In the chaos of the evacuation – racing through darkness, caregivers shouting – Nastya was carried to safety.
But her leg braces were left behind.
These special braces kept her legs working. Without them, her tendons began to tighten. Day by day, step by step, she lost more of her ability to walk on her own.
When we learned what was happening, friends like you helped us get Nastya to an orthopedic specialist. He molded her legs and fitted her for new braces. But the months without them took their toll.
She needs surgery if she is ever to walk with ease again.
Will you make a year-end gift for Nastya and other children like her? And for a limited time, anonymous donors are matching every single gift you give. That means you will have twice as much impact.
